Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa intercepted on 2023’s first pass

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s 2023 started the way his 2022 ended – with an interception.

On Dec. 25, Green Bay quarterback Rasul Douglas intercepted Tagovailoa with 1:29 remaining in the Packers’ 26-20 victory over the Dolphins. It was the third interception thrown in the fourth quarter by Tagovailoa, and the next day, it was determined the Miami QB had a concussion.

The injury caused the fomer Alabama All-American to miss the Dolphins’ final regular-season game and Miami’s 34-31 playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Tagovailoa did not play in the Dolphins’ preseason opener last week – a 19-3 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

On Saturday, Tagovailoa was in the lineup for Miami’s preseason meeting with the Houston Texans. But on the game’s first snap, linebacker Denzel Perryman intercepted Tagovailoa’s pass for tight end Tyler Kroft.

Perryman’s 19-yard return put the Texans on the Dolphins 7-yard line for their first offensive possession. But Houston was stopped on downs.

On Miami’s second possession, Tagovailoa completed 5-of-6 passes for 61 yards as the Dolphins drove 93 yards in 14 plays for a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Raheem Mostert with 5:30 left in the first quarter.

When the Dolphins started their third series, Skylar Thompson came out to play quarterback for Miami.

Tagovailoa is preparing for his fourth season in the NFL. Last season, he had the NFL’s best passing-efficiency rating, but missed four full regular-season games because of concussions.

The Dolphins are scheduled to complete their preseason schedule against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 26.

Miami will kick off the regular season against the Los Angeles Chargers at 3:25 p.m. CDT Sept. 10 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
